Primary knitters celebrating 10 years of keeping WHH neonatal babies warm

Bewsey Lodge Primary School’s knitting club have been keeping the babies being cared for in the Neonatal Unit at Warrington Hospital snug and warm for 10 years.

The school on Lodge Lane, just round the corner from Warrington Hospital, contacted the Neonatal Unit in 2013 to ask if their after-school knitting club could make items for the babies. From then on it has become an annual tradition.

This year the young knitters have amazed us once again with their skills in making brightly coloured blankets, cardigans, and hats under the tuition of teacher Laura Wright, who runs the after-school club with volunteer Jean Hinchliffe.

Jean, 85 has been involved with the after-school knitting club for years.

She said: “I can’t sit still and not use my fingers and I love a project. I love teaching the children the skill of knitting and to see them progress during their time coming to knitting club.”

The current knitting group is made up of 13 year 2 and year 3 pupils and when asked why they liked to knit they replied:

“It’s really satisfying.” Ezekiel, aged nine.

“It’s simply fun.” Michal, aged eight.

“I find it really relaxing.” Isabella, aged eight.

Julia Austin, the nursery nurse on the Neonatal Unit went to the school to meet the club and collect the knitwear commented: “It is always lovely when we receive donations to the unit, but it is extra special when it is made by children.

“I really enjoy coming back to the school each year to see the children knit. Their delight and excitement is clear as they hand over their hard work, knowing that our babies will benefit from their knitting.”
