Specialty areas: General respiratory including asthma, COPD, fibrotic lung disease as well as sleep medicine. 

Specialist area of interest - Lung Cancer, Intervention Procedures, Pleural Diseases and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS).

Clinic days and locations: General respiratory clinic at Warrington on Tuesday PM. Joint chest (lung cancer) clinic at Warrington on Wednesday PM.

Dr Murthy completed his basic medical degree in India and came to the UK in 2003. He completed his postgraduate training in the Mersey region specialising in Respiratory and general medicine. He took up his first consultant job at WHH in 2014 and, soon after, became the clinical lead for the specialty in 2016.

Throughout the pandemic, Dr Murthy remained at the forefront of the trust’s COVID response and was also the principal investigator for COVID research trials at the trust. During the 1st wave of COVID, he helped develop the celebrated Warrington ‘Black Box’ CPAP machines which were instrumental in the hospital’s COVID management strategy. This initiative won several awards – London business school Innovation in adversity award and highly commended in the HSJ Value awards Pilot project of the year. 

Dr Murthy also supported the education and training of junior doctors at the trust in his role as ‘Foundation Programme training director’. Most recently, he has taken on a new role as ‘Deputy Associate Medical Director for clinical effectiveness – cancer’ which leads the hospital’s cancer strategy.
