Dr Higgs trained in ICM and Anaesthesia in NW England and Melbourne, Australia. He completed Advanced ICM training and consultancy in 2000, is an Ex Clinical Director Anaesthesia-ICU and Organ Donation Lead and is also Tracheostomy Lead.

Dr Higgs’s area of special interest is airway management, especially in the critically ill and tracheal extubation. He is an executive of the world’s largest specialist airway management society (Difficult Airway Society) and its Australian equivalent (Safe Airway Society). Dr Higgs chaired the joint Royal College-Faculty of ICM-Intensive Care Society-Difficult Airway Society team which produced the most globally cited critical care airway guideline.

He is co-author of world’s 1st national Tracheal Extubation guideline and UK national COVID19 airway management guideline. Chapter author, several UK/EU/US textbooks and UCL’s ‘Airway MOOC’ - Massive Online Open Course. He is also co-author ‘Aintree Difficult Airway Management’ and University of HongKong ‘Beyond Basics’ courses. Dr Higgs lectures in the UK and oversees on a regular basis and has organised several medical conferences including as executive of the quadrennial ‘World Airway Management Meeting’ (Amsterdam2019). 

Dr Higgs is a UK representative for international expert consensus group- Project for the Universal Management of the Airway.
