New virtual tour of Children’s and Young People’s Outpatient Department

Children have taken on the role of NHS staff in a new virtual tour to showcase the Children’s and Young People’s Outpatient Department, situated on the ground floor of Burtonwood Wing at Warrington Hospital.

The newly refurbished department opened in September 2022 with a capacity to see more than 41,000 children and young people every year. It provides a wide range of excellent outpatient services in a safe, comfortable, welcoming, and reassuring environment. The design of the new outpatient department was led by those who use the service – the children and young people themselves. By engaging with and listening to patients, several major improvements to the overall design have been made, including separate waiting rooms for children and young adults – each themed and decorated accordingly.

The tour navigates the corridors of Warrington Hospital starting at the main entrance. It introduces the award-winning Wayfinder volunteers, who support patients to attend their appointments, before focussing on the layout of Children’s and Young People’s Outpatient Department. The virtual tour explains what happens on arrival for an appointment, helping to reduce anxiety for many of the young patients visiting the hospital for the first time.

Jill Tomlinson, Matron for Child Health, said: “Following on from the success of the Main Outpatients virtual tour launched in December, we wanted to do the same for the Children’s and Young People’s Outpatients Department. We hope it will help patients and families to easily find the department, located just outside of Burtonwood Wing.

“We would like to thank the children who took part. They have been fantastic in taking on the roles of our staff. We hope that by having children showcase the department this will help reduce anxiety for our young patients coming for their appointments, as they can see where to go and what happens in the department before attending.”
