Lung Cancer Pathway

This service is for suspected 2WW Cancer Referrals only. A referral letter must be attached.  Once the referral has been assessed and triaged the booking team will contact the patient to offer them an appointment (which may be face to face or a phone call). We aim to complete this within 2 working days. The appointment will be made within 2 weeks of the referral assessment request being received.

Refer to NICE guidance and National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway (NOLCP). 

•    Suspected Lung cancer
•    Suspicious Lung shadow on CXR or CT scans
•    Unexplained Haemoptysis with normal chest Xray
•    Unilateral pleural effusions/suspicious mesothelioma. 
 

•    Clinical exam by GP/Clinician
•    Chest Xray (especially for Unexplained Haemoptysis) and blood tests including eGFR
•    The ask per NOLCP is to request a CFT priority CT chest and abdomen with contrast in parallel with the referral. 
 

•    Spirometry
•    CT scans
•    PET scans
•    Blood tests
•    Biopsies
•    Bronchoscopy.
 

•    Patient meeting criteria for Non-Specific Symptoms pathway. 
•    Patient without any recent blood or chest Xray. 
•    Referrals that are not suspected cancer. 
 

General Respiratory; Emergency Access (telephone triage via A&E); Community COPD services, Advice and Guidance.
