Emergency Department (Accident and Emergency)

General introduction

We provide urgent treatment for serious and life-threatening conditions for adult and child patients from across Warrington, Runcorn and Widnes areas.

Life-threatening or serious emergencies include severe chest pains, difficulty breathing, bleeding you can’t stop, loss of consciousness, stroke symptoms, severe tummy pain or headache, possible broken bones and children who are very unwell.

There is a dedicated Children's (Paediatric) Emergency Department treatment area within the department which has a separate waiting area and is secure and private from the main waiting area.

We are a designated trauma centre and receive patients from ambulance and paramedic crews, who will enter the department through a separate entrance.

Please be aware that the most seriously ill and injured patients will always be seen immediately, regardless of how busy the department is.

If you choose to visit us and do not need urgent or emergency treatment we may support you to access an alternative urgent treatment service which may reduce the time it takes to be treated. The department is not an alternative an appointment with a GP.

If you are unsure which service to use you can go to 111.nhs.uk or call 111 which will direct you to an alternative urgent treatment service to provide the care and treatment you need.

Opening times

We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
