Ward B10 and B11 - Children's (Paediatrics)

General introduction

The Children’s Ward at Warrington Hospital is located on the ground floor of Burtonwood Wing at the rear of the hospital, near to the Croft Wing entrance.

The ward can be easily identified from its bright aquarium mural covering the walls.

Within the ward we care for babies, children and young people (aged 0 to 17 years) with a variety of medical and surgical conditions.

The Children’s Ward is split into four areas:

  • Ward B10 is a Children's (Paediatric) Elective Day Case Unit consisting of seven beds. The ward team use their experience and knowledge to provide our young patients with reassurance from admission through to discharge.
  • The Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) is a six-bed assessment area.
  • Ward B11 provides two inpatient bays, consisting of two bays of six beds and two side rooms (referred to as cubicles).
  • Ward B11 cubicles consist of 10 individual side rooms. Within B11 cubicles we have facilities to care for infants, children and young people who require high dependency care.

How to access this service

The ward accepts referrals from GPs, urgent treatment centres, midwives, Children and Young People's Outpatients Department, social care colleagues as well as directly from the Emergency Department (Accident and Emergency).

If your child is unwell at home, you will need to access the Children's (Paediatric) Emergency Department through the main Emergency Department and you will be referred to the ward, if required.

We also accept referrals from other hospitals for patients requiring transfer closer to home from a specialist centre.

About the team

Our Children's Ward and other areas are staffed by specially trained children's nurses (paediatric nurses), doctors (paediatricians) and healthcare assistants. They are experts in caring for younger patients.

We also have a range of support teams who look after our patients. On the ward this includes play specialists who help by providing play therapy and explaining procedures and treatments in a way that is appropriate for children.

  • Ward Manager (B10) - Andrea Davies
  • Ward Manager (B11) - Corinne Roe
  • Deputy Ward Manager (B11) - Leonie Hardman
  • Paediatric Lead Nurse - Jill Tomlinson
  • Paediatric Clinical Lead Consultant - Satish Hulikere
Useful information

Access to the ward - there is a secure intercom service in place to ensure the safety of those in the ward. Please do not allow other people into the ward when visiting your child.

Play facilities - we have a playroom, outdoor play area, and a new sensory room. If children are unable to access the playroom the play specialist can also bring DVDs, board games, arts and craft activities or video games to keep children busy while waiting for a procedure. Please remember to bring things with you that will help reduce worries and boredom as play resources are shared between all patients in the hospital.

Parent facilities - these include a shower room and relatives’ room to make drinks and food, and have a break whilst staying on the ward. Our philosophy is to deliver high-quality and evidence-based care that is centred on the needs of children and families.
