Community Respiratory Team


General introduction

The Community Respiratory Team provide specialist assessment and management for patients with chronic lung disease.

This includes patients with:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema, chronic bronchitis and fixed airways disease
  • bronchiectasis
  • pulmonary fibrosis
  • non‑acute asthma (clinic only)

Services we provide: 

  • Acute Respiratory Infection Virtual Ward (VW)
  • prevention of admission / admission avoidance for patients with chronic lung disease
  • symptom management
  • optimisation of treatment
  • advanced clinical practitioner clinic
  • oxygen clinics - long term and ambulatory oxygen assessments
  • respiratory nurse led clinics for non-acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) / asthma management
How to access this service

We cover Warrington and Halton areas, including Widnes and Runcorn.

Referrals are accepted for people registered with a GP in the Warrington and Halton area who experience/are:

  • regular worsening of their condition
  • at risk of hospitalisation when acutely unwell
  • uncontrolled breathlessness
  • difficulty clearing their chest
  • requiring oxygen assessment, or
  • would benefit from optimisation of respiratory medicines.

Referrals can be made by a healthcare professional, including a GP, practice nurse, physiotherapist, consultant, advanced clinical practitioner or a member of our respiratory team.

Self‑referral is available following an initial referral from a healthcare professional for patients with a confirmed respiratory diagnosis (excluding asthma).

Opening hours

8:30am to 7:30pm, seven days a week, including weekends and bank holidays.

About the team

The Community Respiratory Team consists of:

  • a respiratory matron
  • an advanced clinical practitioner
  • specialist respiratory nurses 
  • physiotherapists
  • healthcare assistants
  • administrative support

The team are all trained in working with people with chronic lung disease.
