Orthopaedic Clinical Assessment and Treatment (OCATS) / Physiotherapy – Warrington

General introduction

Our services

Orthopaedic Clinical Assessment Clinic

The service assesses patients with disorders and injuries of the neuro‑musculoskeletal system, including bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerve‑related problems.

The aim of the Orthopaedic Clinical Assessment Clinic is to provide expert assessment, arrange diagnostic investigations (such as X‑rays and MRI scans) and determine the most appropriate course of action to improve a patient’s symptoms.

Where appropriate, we are also able to offer joint and soft‑tissue injections for certain conditions, delivered by highly qualified clinicians.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy Clinic

The Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Clinic provides high‑quality patient care using an evidence‑based approach to assessment and treatment.

Similar to the OCATS clinic, the MSK clinic assesses patients with disorders and injuries of the neuro‑musculoskeletal system. Patients are referred to the MSK clinic when physiotherapist‑led rehabilitation is considered the most appropriate way to meet their needs.

The MSK service offers a wide range of interventions, including:

  • personalised education about the factors contributing to ongoing pain
  • activity‑based rehabilitation
  • referral to appropriate exercise classes
  • lifestyle advice

These approaches help patients develop strategies to reduce or manage their pain and support them to return to a more enjoyable and active life.

How to access this service

Who can access the service?

Adults and children with orthopaedic conditions involving the neuro‑musculoskeletal system – including bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves.

A referral must be completed by a health professional.

Appointments

At your first appointment, a clinician will discuss your symptoms, medical history and how the problem affects daily life, followed by a physical examination and a personalised plan.

Appointments usually last 45-60 minutes, with follow‑ups lasting 30-45 minutes.

Clinics run across several Warrington locations, and you may be seen by physiotherapists, advanced practitioners or other MSK specialists depending on your needs. You should wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed.

Treatment may include exercise‑based rehabilitation, education, lifestyle advice, investigations such as X‑rays or MRI scans, or onward referral if required.

About the team

We have highly experienced MSK physiotherapists with a wide range of specialist interest areas, including clinicians who have completed advanced training in complex back pain, chronic pain disorders, sporting injuries and post‑surgery rehabilitation.
