Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU)

General introduction

Our Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) is for women with a range of conditions and concerns including:

  • acute pelvic pain
  • heavy irregular vaginal bleeding
  • issues related to coils or abscesses

We are also available to women who have concerns during early pregnancy.

Opening times

GAU is open seven days a week, from 8am to 8pm.

How to access this service

Appointment is by referral only unless you have already been seen in the department for an early pregnancy problem (up to 18 weeks pregnant) or a current gynaecological problem.

Referrals can be made by GPs, midwives or through contacting NHS 111. NHS 111 can now book time slots direct with our GAU service without patients needing to go via the Accident and Emergency Department.

About the team

If you visit the Gynaecology Assessment Unit, you will be assessed by a gynaecology advanced nurse practitioner or a doctor specialising in gynaecology.
