Children's Audiology – Warrington

General introduction

We provide hearing assessments for children and young people where there are concerns about hearing or a potential risk of hearing loss.

This includes a routine hearing screening service for all Warrington pupils soon after they start school (in reception / year one).

Children diagnosed with a permanent hearing impairment are offered ongoing follow‑ups, and an individual care plan is developed in partnership with parents or guardians.

Our aim is to maximise a child’s access to speech sounds. Strategies are tailored to the needs of each child and family, and may include listening tactics, hearing aids, or referral for surgical treatments including implantable devices or grommet insertion.

We work closely with specialist teachers for children with hearing impairment and other professionals to help support effective communication in early years settings, at school and at home.

How to access this service

The Children’s Audiology Service is available to all Warrington children and young people aged 0-16 years, with concerns about hearing or a diagnosed hearing issue.

If a young person has been fitted with hearing aids, or has additional needs that require the specialist expertise and testing facilities of the Children’s Audiology Service, they can continue to be seen up to the age of 19 years.

Referrals

We have an open referral policy, which means parents and professionals can refer directly. You can contact the office if you have concerns about your child’s hearing. Children and young people should be registered with a Warrington GP.

If a professional is already involved with your child, it is often helpful for them to make the referral so they can outline their involvement and any specific concerns.

All new referrals will receive an opt‑in letter asking families to contact the service to arrange an appointment. We aim to offer an appointment within six weeks of receiving the referral.

Interpreter and translation services are available if required.

Useful information

All members of staff receive disability awareness training and take part in regular supervision and clinical development to maintain their skills and build new expertise.

All children’s audiology staff are experienced in assessing and supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Equipment

Hearing aids, ear moulds, tubing and batteries will be provided if they are required.

Families are expected to fit hearing aids if they are issued and to take appropriate care of all equipment. Training and guidance will be provided to help you use and look after any equipment safely and confidently.
