Shopping City Health Hub Nears Completion

Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals’ satellite clinics will make services more accessible to patients.

18th August 2022: Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals’ new Halton Health Hub at Runcorn Shopping City is nearing completion with handover to the Trust expected in September 2022. The Hub will be home to Audiology, Ophthalmology and Dietetics services that were formally located at Halton Hospital’s Nightingale building and offsite in Runcorn.

The programme, funded by the Trust’s own capital programme and Halton Borough Council’s successful bid to the Liverpool City Centre Town Centre Commission, is designed to make these traditional outpatient services more accessible to patients by locating them right in the heart of the community.

The Trust expects to be able to increase the numbers of patients seen by specialist clinical staff and provide an improved experience for patients. As well as freeing up clinical space at Halton – to enable more planned care services to be provided at Halton hospital - the Hub will support the regeneration of Shopping City by repurposing long-vacant space and increasing footfall.

The development of Halton Health Hub follows formal public consultation in the summer of 2021 which drew strong backing with nearly two thirds of respondents supporting the proposals. The major themes identified through this consultation have helped inform the final design and service offer addressing key concerns including accessibility, provision of disabled parking bays and wayfinding signage.

Lucy Gardner, the Trust’s Director of Strategy and Partnerships said: “Offering these services in a retail environment will make it easier for patients to access these services, some of which will be expanded to offer a greater range and volume of tests. Most importantly, Halton residents will no longer have to travel out of the borough to receive elements of audiology, dietetics or ophthalmology care.

“We know Halton residents are passionate about Halton Hospital and this is a real positive development for the hospital and in line with our programme of expanding and further developing Halton as a dedicated elective (planned care) site. No estate will be lost or decommissioned at Halton Hospital. “We are especially grateful to the children of Astmoor and Castle View primary schools for their superb drawings – it was impossible to select just one so we plan to use as many as possible to decorate the Hub”

Ophthalmology, dietetics and audiology services provided at Warrington Hospital are unaffected by these plans.
