Antenatal Screening Tests


About this service

All women are offered a range of screening tests in line with recommendations from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) + National Screening Committee (NSC).

Blood tests at booking visit for:

  • Sickle cell anaemia

  • Thalassaemias

  • HIV

  • Hepatitis B

  • Rubella immunity

  • Syphilis

  • Blood grouping and antibody testing

 
A urine specimen is sent to look for bacteria also

  • Down’s Syndrome Screening blood test (quadruple test) is offered from 14 wks 2 days – 20 weeks.

  • Urine testing for Chlamydia is offered to under 25 year old women via their GPs.

  • Dating scans ideally between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy.

  • Anomaly scan between 18 and 21 weeks.

Amniocentesis is offered to older women, women with a high risk of having a baby with a chromosomal test. Amniocentesis is inserting a needle into the womb under ultrasound control to obtain a small amount of the waters surrounding the baby in order to find out if the baby has normal chromosomes.
